Chicken Monstrance (1999)
Supermarket Nocturne Series. (They light up at night). As in many cathedrals my favourites tend to be Spanish no vulgarity has willingly been left unexploited.
Chicken Monstrance: Tesco Easter (1999); thirty pieces of silver; half a dozen Tesco egg shells; a year's collection of wishbones including the Christmas turkey; cutlery, papier mache; cornelian cabochons; gold leaf.
I made this in response to a grim article written by Jonathan Leake in The Sunday Times in 2000 about the suffering of the £2 battery chicken produced for Tesco. I am very glad that TV chefs have now made cruelty against farm animals public and used a free-range chicken and eggs in the making of this piece.
