The Victoria Beckham Shabti Box (2009); Perspex; Sculpey; celebrity gossip magazines; gold leaf etc.
While in Egypt, I became fascinated by the little shabtis entombed with their mummified masters or mistresses and sometimes made in their likeness. Their unenviable and self-effacing purpose was to graft for them in the afterlife as their living counterparts had once done in the corporeal world, and I identified with them in a way I could not with their staggeringly glamorous and powerful employers.
Stuck in the endless congestion of Cairo, football came up between the men in the front of the car (as it does) and Lamis, a sophisticated young Egyptian businesswoman, hugely diverted me in the back with her extensive knowledge of English WAGS, Victoria Beckham in particular. All this stuff merged when I got home into this piece.
